BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – After seeing marked improvement over the course of the program’s first two seasons excitement and anticipation is beginning to ramp up around the Florida Tech football team.

On Monday, the team began its third season with the opening of fall practice.

There were a lot of old and a lot of new faces as the Panthers returned from their summer hiatus. In total, FIT welcomed 54 newcomers to Panther Field, adjacent to the Varsity Training Center, while 68 returners donned the crimson and white practice jerseys once again.

Although there is still plenty to work on prior to the Sept. 5 season opener against Newberry, head coach Steve Englehart has noticed the improvement over the previous two seasons.

“Today was a typical day one practice,” said Englehart.

“We had good energy from everyone, just lacked execution at times. We have to continue to harp on the little things. I think it was better than the last two years but we still have a lot of work to do.”

Much of the day was spent practicing technique with positions grouping up with their respective coaches and running through drills.

There was very limited contact as players were equipped with no padding other than their helmets. Nonetheless many individuals were able to stand out during the opening practice.

One of those who stood out was senior defensive back Leo Alba II, who showcased his skills with some big plays during one-on-one drills, including an acrobatic pass knock down and an interception.

“It feels great being back out here, nothing beats the heat here in Florida,” said Alba II.

“I’m happy to be back with the old squad, basically everyone is back with a couple of new additions. I’m just excited for day one.”
