BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Searching for an early season resume booster in a matchup with 2014 NCAA Tournament qualifier St. Edward’s, the Florida Tech Panthers fell just short in a tough 2-1 setback this past weekend.

Freshman Keira McCarthy registered her first career goal, but two first half scores by the Hilltoppers proved too much to overcome in the end.

Defensively, Florida Tech held St. Edward’s in check throughout much of the match. Overall, the Hilltoppers tallied only two shots on goal, but were able to capitalize on their limited opportunities.

The Hilltoppers’ Whytneigh Duffie cashed in in the 36th minute after sending a header towards the back post to beat Florida Tech keeper Julia Kantor for her first goal in 2015.

St. Edward’s would later add to its cushion in the 45th minute when Elin Rosenberg’s strike from five yards out found the back of the net.

Through their first three matches, including the preseason, the Panthers had only allowed one goal entirely entering Saturday.

Florida Tech found some momentum midway through the second half, though, as McCarthy cut the deficit in half on a well-played ball into the box by Aubri Williamson.

However, chances were few and far between down the stretch, as Florida Tech could only muster two corner kicks and two shots in the final 25-plus minutes.

Amidst its five-game road swing to start the year, Florida Tech will now head to South Carolina to meet USC-Beaufort next Thursday at 4 p.m. ET. The Sand Sharks dropped to 0-4-1 this season following Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Truett-McConnell.
