Florida Tech Women’s Tennis Performs ‘Solid’ On Clay At Coastal Georgia Fall Invitational

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech women’s tennis represented the Crimson and Gray well on Saturday, concluding a successful stint at the Coastal Georgia Fall Invitational at the Jekyll Island Tennis Center.

“A solid day of competitive match play again on the clay,” said assistant coach Ken Obermeier. “We struggled a little against Division I Jacksonville State but the girls showed steady improvement throughout the weekend.”

Panther duo Alahna Reto and Mariana Castaneiras will bring the flight 1 doubles title back to Melbourne after registering a pair of wins. The pair defeated Olivia Nguyen and Claudia Marsala of JSU 8-6 before topping Emy Alpland and Daniela Caruso of Coastal Georgia 9-7 in the finals.

In flight 2 doubles, Jessica Widmark and Flavia Zisi Tegou bounced back from an 8-1 loss to JSU’s Diana Mirceta and Amanda Stamant by overpowering an unattached team 8-2 for third place.

Reto also advanced to the flight 1 singles final with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Coastal Georgia’s Freja Rasmussen but was upended by Marsala 6-3, 6-4.

Castaneiras fell 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 to Genevie Ulanday of JSU but came back with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 “W” against Alpland. Widmark was beaten 7-5, 6-1 by Sadey St. Amant of Jacksonville State but garnered third with a 6-0, 6-2 decision against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College’s Morgan Trask.

JSU’s Isabella Calves outpaced Zisi Tegou 6-1, 6-2. However, Zisi Tegou was able to place third in flight 4 after defeating Taylor Whitehead of ABAC 6-2, 6-4.
