UPDATE: Oct. 23, 2015 – 10:08 a.m.

All lanes of State Road 528 are now open, according to Trooper Wanda D. Diaz of the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Florida Department of Transportation has inspected both the east and west bound bridge damage. Both bridges have been cleared to open for normal traffic.

The U.S. Coast Guard will conduct an investigation regarding the vessel and circumstances of the crash.

BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – State Road 528 Causeway have been shut down after a barge crashed into the bridge.

No injuries have been reported.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is currently assisting the Cocoa Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol and Florida Department of Transportation after the barge struck the 528 bridge in Merritt Island.

According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, both east and westbound lanes are currently closed and traffic will be impacted between U.S. 1 in Cocoa and State Road 3 in Merritt Island until further notice.

Drivers should use the State Road 520 Causeway as detour.
