Dr. Bhavin Patel: Delivered Medical Supplies And Volunteered In Nepal After A Disastrous Earthquake

When a disastrous earthquake hit Nepal earlier this year, the Doctor’s Goodwill Foundation was ready to go with medical supplies, volunteer physicians, nurses, business people and others ready to lend a helping hand to the people in need.

One of those, Dr. Bhavin Patel of Titusville, felt he was receiving the gift of a lifetime.  Being his first humanitarian mission since becoming a doctor, the young man said it was a “surreal” sight to see and work in such disaster.

“Seeing the overall destruction with people huddled in tents and all of the injuries was overwhelming and shocking,” Dr. Patel said.

But, he added what was remarkable to him in the midst of all of the devastation was the spirit of the Nepalese people and how grateful and welcoming they were.

The trip was also a real learning experience for the young doctor, saying he worked side-by-side with real professionals on all types of injuries, treating hundreds of people a day.

Many of the injured lived in outlying areas that were hard to reach and their family members would carry them for miles for help: “It’s truly amazing,” he said.

TRULY AMAZING

Helping in this type of environment is a long way from his former experience with DGF where he helped during the annual Health Event at Space Coast Stadium.

Saying his family has been friends with DGF founder Dr. Kanti Bhalani for years, he didn’t understand the depth or amount of help the group offered until he experienced it himself:

“I’ve been hearing about DGF for years and never really understood how much the organization does both locally and across the world. It is truly amazing,” he added.

At home again and getting ready to take his final boards to become a primary care physician, Dr. Patel said his experience has taught him to think globally and not just locally when it comes to volunteering and helping others.
