BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Despite dressing only eight players Eastern Florida’s men’s basketball team cruised to its 50th straight victory at home on Wednesday defeating Red Devil Academy 112-48.
The victory at the Titan Field House on the Melbourne Campus improved Eastern Florida to 3-0 and set the stage for its early-season showdown with fellow Florida College System Activities Association power College of Central Florida (2-0).
The teams meet at 7 p.m. Friday in Melbourne in a game that will be televised on WEFS-TV and streamed live at www.efsctitans.com
Admission is free.
The Titans, shorthanded due to minor injuries, had no trouble with undermanned Red Devil which dressed only six players.
Paced by 13 points from freshman Keoni Wallington – playing just a few miles south on Wickham Road from his high school court at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy – and 12 from freshman Kareem Brewton, the Titans led 58-21 at halftime.
They reached the 70-point mark – leading 70-25 – with 15 minutes and 15 seconds remaining in the game and hit 100 with 5:54 to go.
Wallington and classmate Joey Martin finished the game with 22 points apiece. Martin scored 20 in Eastern Florida’s 88-76 victory over Atlanta Metro on Saturday.
Brewton finished with 20 points and classmate Joan Duran and sophomore Zavier Peart with 12 each.
“I just came in and did what coach wanted me to do,” said Wallington. “He told me at practice he wanted me to score so that’s what I had to do.
“The game’s faster than high school. I’m getting used to it. Just doing what coach wants me to do. Just playing my role.”
Head coach Jeremy Shulman came away with positives and a few things to work on.
“We have a lot of pride in our home court,” Shulman said. “We’ve gotten our rotations down pat. Still working on chemistry. We shared the ball very well tonight. I thought we passed the basketball very well.
“We’ve still got to get better defensively. We have to become a better rebounding team especially with Central Florida coming up on Friday.”
