The Coast Guard is searching for a man who went overboard from the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines Oasis of the Seas cruise ship near the Bahamas.
According to the cruise line, the 35-year old man from Brazil was spotted by crew members intentionally jumping from the seventh deck to a lifeboat below around 1 a.m. on Friday.
At this time, it’s unclear if he missed the raft or if he it, but somehow he ended up on a davit which used to raise and lower the raft. He clung there for a short time as several passengers tried to help him.
Unfortunately he lost his grip and fell into the water.
The Oasis of the Seas currently homeports at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. The ship departed last Saturday on a seven-day trip.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a C-130 aircraft based in Clearwater, Florida, is searching for the victim. An MH-60 helicopter joined the search at daybreak, and the cruise ship sent two search boats to look for the man.
Royal Caribbean’s 225,282-ton Oasis of the Seas will relocate to Port Canaveral for the winter 2016-2017 cruise season.
