BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – The Port Canaveral Seafood and Music Festival committee plans to recycle thousands of pounds of oyster shells, February 26-28 at it’s annual seafood festival event.

“Thanks to the Shuck and Share Recycling Program from the Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach, we will be able to put all our used oyster shells to good use from our seafood festival,” said Giles Malone, Director of Brevard Production Inc., which is organizing the three day-seafood extravaganza.
“In the past two years, they have recycled over 170,000lbs of oyster shells and from that they have placed over 100,000lbs back into the Indian River Lagoon in the form of oyster bags or mats.”
The event is expect to attract more than 50,000 visitors to Port Canaveral and the beaches.
A team of volunteers will collect the shells placed in special recycle bins placed around the festival and the public will receive educational information about the program.
“We think that it is great that we will be able to place the used shells back to mother nature and help the lagoon,” said Malone.
Also, during the Port Canaveral Seafood and Music Festival, the public will be able to take free tours of the world class seafood processing plants at Wild Ocean Seafood and Seafood Atlantic in the Cove at Port Canaveral.
