A Message From West Melbourne Police Regarding Suspicious Person In South Brevard

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A message from the West Melbourne Police Department:

Earlier this month we told you about a suspicious person at a local shopping center who was asking people for help at his vehicle.

It seems this past weekend, he was back at it when he approached a woman on Saturday morning in the parking lot of Publix located at 145 Palm Bay Road.

Later the same day, we received a call that the man was in the Hammock Landings Shopping Center doing the same thing yet again. Our officers quickly converged on the area and located him. He has been identified and interviewed.

He is a local man who, from all accounts, is a panhandler looking for a handout.

Some have asked why this man has not been arrested. While his behavior may seem suspicious or troubling to some, it is important to know that we have not received any reports of this man committing any crimes. He has not threatened, touched, or robbed anyone.

In fact, he has not been aggressive in the situations reported to us, often times moving along when he is turned down. However, he has been issued a Trespass Warning for the Hammock Landings Shopping Center.

This means that if he returns, he could be arrested for Trespass after Warning. Our detectives will be working with other local businesses to spread the word about his activity.

Again, we remind our citizens and visitors to remain vigilant of their surroundings at all times. As a general rule, we discourage anyone from going anywhere with a person they don’t know; whether that be to someone’s vehicle or otherwise.

Public safety is our business, and it’s a business that succeeds with community partnerships.

We rely on each of you to help us be the eyes and ears of our community, so please remember: IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING!
