BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Last week the Melbourne City Council approved an agreement to purchase and install a large, state-of-the-art playground at Riverview Park.

The new playground will be the first of its kind in Brevard County, with unique features like multi-generation “PLAY” elements, curved shaped supports and kaleidoscope-like art features.

“This new play structure will help make Riverview Park a destination,” said Kevin Briski, director of Parks, Recreation & Golf for the City of Melbourne.

“In addition to being larger than other playgrounds in the area, it has been designed to provide interest, as well as physical and mental challenges to children of all ages and abilities.”

Installing the new playground is the first phase of a multi-year master plan that Council adopted in 2014 to restore and improve the 16-acre park.

In addition to the destination playground, the City expects to complete the following projects by the end of this year:
· Installation of five 20’ x 20’ shade canopies around the playground.
· Renovations to the existing pavilion.
· Shoreline restoration.

The cost of the new playground ($190,396.73) is being funded through the City’s annual Community Development Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Council also voted to use $89,216.40 of Community Development Block Grant funding to replace an old, outdated playground at Lipscomb Park with new playground equipment that will be more interesting, more physically and mentally challenging, and safer than the current play
structure.
