(FOX8) – Crews are making progress removing the oil discharged by a shell oil pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico.

As of Sunday, May 15, teams deployed by the Coast Guard ans Shell have recovered more than 51,000 gallons of oily-water mixture according to the Coast Guard.

The spill occurred on Thursday, May 12, when a segment of flow line at the Glider Field, located about 90 miles south of Timbalier Island, discharged 88,200 gallons of crude oil into the water.
