BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Even before taking his first steps on campus as a collegiate athlete, Florida Tech track and field incoming freshman Ondrej Rapp has already been making a name for himself in his home country of the Czech Republic.
At the 2016 Czech Republic Junior National Championships in Třinec on June 25-26, Rapp won the long jump competition with a personal-record attempt of 7.43m, almost a foot farther than the second place finisher.
This is Rapp’s third time being crowned as the junior national champion in the long jump, as he also came away with the gold medal in 2014 and 2015.
Rapp comes to FIT all the way from the Dr. Anton Randa Grammar School in the Czech Republic. A sprinter and jumper, Rapp, prior to this past meet, holds personal bests of 7.07s in the 60m dash, 10.91s in the 100m dash, and 21.87s in the 200m dash along with top distances of 23-7.5 in the long jump and 6-2.75 in the high jump.
He was one of the top performers in his division, earning fifth-place in the long jump and seventh in the 200m at the 2016 Czech Republic Senior Indoor National Championships.
Rapp plans to major in applied behavior analysis at Florida Tech.
Florida Tech Head coach Jason Munsch said about his new prized student athlete“Ondrej is a great technician with excellent speed.”
“He has many years of experience in the sport and will also be a key contributor for us in the sprints. The first thing I noticed about Ondrej was the intensity with which he competes. Not only is he going to perform well in the jumps, he is going to bring another level of intensity and competitiveness to our practices and team culture.”
