 Melbourne police officers were called to the Eau Gallie Causeway early Sunday morning at 4:45 a.m. in response to a report of a man standing on the outer railing at the top of the Causeway.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne police officers were called to the Eau Gallie Causeway early Sunday morning at 4:45 a.m. in response to a report of a man standing on the outer railing at the top of the Causeway.

Eastbound traffic was shut down during the negotiation, but the traffic was light and impact was minimal.

According to police, a citizens saw a black male standing on the outer railing and called authorities. Initial callers indicated the subject was wearing a pair of boxers and appeared as though he planned to jump over the side.

“Officers arrived on scene and met with the agitated male who was sitting on the outer railing,” said the Melbourne police in a release. The male advised officers he planned to jump.

“One of the officers successfully engaged the male in conversation for approximately 35 minutes. The male was ultimately talked down off the railing and taken into custody without injury to himself or officers.”

The subject was transported to a local mental health facility for professional evaluation.
