Request to citizens to refrain from using toilets, showering, washing laundry or doing dishes

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – Residents of Cocoa Beach will be allowed to return to their homes immediately, but a power outage caused Friday by Hurricane Matthew has stalled the city’s sewage system, prompting a request to citizens to refrain from using toilets, showering, washing laundry or doing dishes, according to Brevard County Emergency Management.

The city has been working to address the critical water treatment outage, but has opted to let stranded residents who evacuated for Hurricane Matthew to return to their homes.

If the plant is overwhelmed before the plant is operational, thousands of gallons of raw sewage would need to be diverted into the Banana River, so it is important to limit sewage use.

The City is working with Florida Power and Light to get power back to the plant as soon as possible.
