City Of Melbourne Recognizes Citizens Who Serve As Volunteers During Annual Reception

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – On Tuesday evening, citizens who serve as volunteer board members were honored for their years of service to the City of Melbourne during the Annual Board Reception.

“The city’s advisory boards provide an avenue for its citizens to participate in the governing process,” said City Manager Mike McNees.

“Our current volunteer board members provide vital input to the City Council on a number of local issues and show a tremendous dedication to the well-being of the city through their many years of service.”

In 2016, approximately 131 residents served on 17 standing boards and committees that guide a range of city services from architectural standards and affordable housing to code enforcement and pension planning.

Many of the city’s board members have served for multiple years — even decades. Combined, their years of service total more than 1,000.

Charles Jackson received a special award last night in recognition of his 40 years of service on the Zoning Board of Adjustment. Mr. Jackson is the city’s longest serving board member.

The City has been hosting the board reception annually since 1999 as a way to formally recognize and show appreciation for its volunteer board members. The following volunteers were recognized for reaching service milestones in 2016:

Affordable Housing Advisory Committee:

• Christine Davis, 5 years

Babcock Street Community Redevelopment Agency Advisory Committee:

• John Edmiston, 15 years

Beautification and Environmental Advisory Committee:

• Celeste Henry, 10 years

Citizens’ Advisory Board:

• Carol Bush, 5 years

Code Enforcement Board:

• Thomas Saam, 10 years

Firefighters Pension Plan Board of Trustees:

• Thomas Quinn, 5 years

Golf Courses Advisory Board:

• Robert Coleman, 5 years
• John J. Francey, 20 years
• Stephen Redoway, 5 years

Historic and Architectural Review Board:

• Randall Thron, 30 years

Library Board:

• Diane Bryant, 5 years

Melbourne Downtown Redevelopment Agency Advisory Committee:

• LeAnn Smithson, 10 years

Melbourne Housing Authority

• Judith Doyle, 10 years
• Richard Freeman, 5 years
• Belinda Stewart, 5 years

Olde Eau Gallie Riverfront Community Redevelopment Agency Advisory Committee:

• George H. Alexander, 15 years
• Gene H. Davis, 15 years
• Jon Shepherd, 5 years

Planning & Zoning Board:

• Nathaniel Clement, 20 years
• Alan King, 25 years
• George Lebovitz, 5 years

Police Officers’ Retirement Trust Fund Board of Trustees:

• Scott Olson, 10 years
