BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA –A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 3 p.m.Thursday, Oct. 6, to officially mark opening of the University of Florida/Brevard County Extension Service’s Wickham Park Community Garden.
The Partnership between UF/IFAS Extension and Brevard County is an expansion of the Brevard County Farmer’s Market, and offers residents of Brevard County opportunity to give their green thumbs a workout.
The goal is to provide participants a place to grow healthy, nutritious food while experiencing the joys of gardening.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at the garden, which is adjacent to the UF/Brevard Extension Service’s 4-H Market Poultry Project Barn at Wickham Park. The fenced Community Garden features 40 4-foot-by-16-foot raised garden beds with micro-irrigation.
There are a number of ways to participate. Community members have chosen to be a part of the garden as sponsors, volunteers or renter/growers.
Sponsors will be integral in providing funding for produce grown by volunteers, and given to recipients of their choice, as well as to our Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food assistance program recipients in return for their labors.
This is going to be a fantastic way to give back to the community, and to provide a much-needed source of healthy food for under-served members of the community.
The ribbon-cutting event will coincide with the Brevard County Farmers’ Market, which is held 3-6 p.m. every Thursday, just one barn down from the garden.
So stop by, visit the garden and the market, and see how we’re growing for you.
