BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Families are encouraged to come celebrate the opening of a much-anticipated new playground — the first of its kind in Brevard County — at Riverview Park “Play-A-Palooza,” today from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
In addition to entertainment and refreshments, park visitors will also get a chance to show their support for the ongoing revitalization and rejuvenation of Riverview Park.
During the dedication ceremony, the city will formally kick off “Pickets for Park” – a new fundraising program that will give park lovers a chance to help accelerate planned park improvements by purchasing a customized engraved picket ($100.00) for the fence surrounding the park’s new playground.
The Pickets for Parks initial fundraising goal of $30,000 will be put toward the installation of decorative fencing and new restroom facilities for playground visitors.
When the City of Melbourne acquired Riverview Park in 2012, it was in desperate need of revitalization.
The new playground is the first phase of a multi-year master plan that Melbourne City Council adopted in 2014 to restore and improve the 16-acre park. The city expects to complete installation of five 20’ x 20’ shade canopies around the playground, renovate the existing pavilion and restore the shoreline by the end of 2016.
Future improvements include a paved pedestrian multi-use trail, children’s splash park, fishing pier, and sand volleyball courts.
These improvements are intended to transform the under-used park into a recreational destination and economic driver for the entire community.
“A restored and improved park will be a community asset and a special place of play once again for local families and visiting guests,” said Melbourne Parks, Recreation & Golf Director, Kevin Briski.
“It will reflect our region’s spirit and dedication to an excellent quality of life, promote wellness and challenging play, and create memories for years to come.”
Riverview Park updates will take place over the next several years and will be funded by a combination of municipal funds, grant monies, and contributions from generous community members through Pickets for Parks.
