BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – On a cool and brisk Florida November night, both teams exchanged blows in overtime like two heavyweight fighters in a 12-round fight.

Melbourne Central Catholic advanced to the next round of the playoffs Friday night after defeating Clearwater Central Catholic in one of the most memorable games played in Brevard County.

The Hustlers fought through nine overtimes to defeat the Marauders 69-62 after both teams tied up at 21 at the end of regulation.

After being down 14-0 early in the game, MCC went to work and managed to send the game to overtime.

The Hustlers played inspiring football on both sides of the ball. The Hustlers’ defense managed to shutout Clearwater Central Catholic in the second half which paved the way for Collazo and Co. to cut into CCC’s 21-7 lead at halftime.

A 37-yard touchdown run by Lavonte Valentine in the third quarter and a fourth quarter 6-yard touchdown run by Collazo sent this Region 3-3A championship game into one of the longest games played in high school football history.

Blocked field goals and extra points added to the drama in this overtime, as both teams fought to extend their seasons one more week.

A fourth down goal line stop in the 9th overtime by the MCC Hustler defense proved to be the only difference between these two schools.

The game fell just short of the all-time high school record for overtimes which saw two Texas high schools in 2010 go into 12 overtimes and combine for 165 points, Jacksonville defeated Nacogdoches 84-81.

The Hustlers will host Chaminade-Madonna next Friday.

Chaminade-Madonna defeated Oxbridge Academy 30-13 Friday night.
