Orlando City To Open MLS Season At Home Against New York City FC In New State of the Art Stadium

ORLANDO, FLORIDA (ORLANDO CITY SC) – Orlando City SC will open its third Major League Soccer (MLS) campaign on Sunday, March 5, hosting fellow 2015 expansion rival New York City FC. The complete regular season schedule, along with the television schedules for the U.S. and Canada, will be announced in early January.

With this match, the Lions will debut its new world-class, 25,500-capacity soccer venue in downtown Orlando.

While the 2017 season ticket capacity of 18,000 is sold out, fans can sign up for the 2018 waiting list through a LionNation membership. A limited amount of single game tickets will go on sale to the general public in February 2017.

Fans are encouraged to become members of LionNation to receive first access to single game tickets as they become available.

Scheduled to kickoff at 5 p.m. ET, the 2017 season opener will mark the seventh matchup between the expansion sides. Since its record-breaking inaugural MLS game in front of over 62,500 fans against NYCFC in 2015, Orlando has dominated the all-time series with a 3-1-2 record.

Their previous encounters have proven to be thrillers, with 21 goals scored in six games, including six goals by City’s Cyle Larin, three from Lions captain Kaká and three from 2016 MLS Most Valuable Player David Villa.

Additionally, City will travel north for its first away match of the season, when it visits the New England Revolution on Saturday, March 11, at Gillette Stadium. The Lions will aim to continue their perfect record in road openers, having earned clean sheet victories in their past two occasions.

Coming off a season that featured record numbers in both attendance and total television viewership, MLS’ 22nd season includes a pair of expansion clubs taking the field in new markets of Atlanta and Minnesota.

Each club will play 34 games, comprised of 17 home games and 17 away games. Teams will face each of their 10 conference opponents twice during the season with one game at home and one game away. Clubs also will compete in select additional games against different conference opponents three times, and they will face non-conference opponents once.
