BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Two child sexual predators are facing as much as 15 years in prison if found guilty on charges of traveling to meet a minor and lewd and lascivious conduct.
The arrests made by the Cocoa Police Department are the result of ongoing undercover investigations in which the two suspects in separate incidents arranged to meet a 14-year-old female for sex.
“In the first case the suspect, identified as Robert Bowen, 33, made contact online with whom he thought was a 14-year-old girl,” said Yvonne Martinez, Cocoa Police Public Information Officer.
“The two exchanged contact information after which Bowen began making conversation about sexual acts he wished to engage in with the female.
The conversation then led to a planned meeting on December 29 where the suspect travelled from St. Cloud to an undisclosed location. The suspect stated he would be driving a PT Cruiser. Officers located the vehicle and the suspect was arrested.”
The second case occurred one week later on January 5.
“The suspect in this case is identified as 57-year old Steven Bernhard,” said Martinez.
“Bernhard made online contact with a person he thought was a 14-year-old girl and arranged to travel from Melbourne to meet her for sex.”
In online conversations with the girl Bernhard was specific about the sexual activity he wished to engage in with her. The meet time and location were agreed upon and officers were able to arrest the suspect when he arrived.
“These child predators have a significant online presence,” said Cocoa Police Detective Debra Titkanich.
“We will continue to have our own online presence in order to prevent them from finding a true victim.”
Bernhard is being held in the Brevard County Jail on a combined $85,000 bond. Bowen is being held on $70,000 bond.
