BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – Brevard County Fire Rescue and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house fire in Merritt Island early Wednesday morning that reportedly killed 45 cats, 5 dogs, a raccoon and a bird, according to News 13’s Greg Pallone.

Reports say rescue crews were able to save one cat and 13 dogs in the carnage.

According to preliminary reports, rescue units were called to a house near the 400 block of Kennwood Ave. regarding a ‘structure fire’ at around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.

When crews arrived, they discovered multiple windows had been boarded up and the doors were locked, according to a Brevard County Fire Rescue spokesperson.

After a preliminary investigation, authorities determined the fire started in a small bedroom, however, the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Red Cross was called to the scene for two people who were reportedly the occupants of the house.

Brevard County Animal Services was also called in to assist in the cleanup.
