HISTORIC BREVARD
The idea for an intracoastal waterway was envisioned in the Internal Improvement Act of the
1850s, but didn’t become the waterway we know today until the huge project of dredging canals
and connecting bodies of water was taken over and completed by the Corps of Engineers in the
1930s.
