WATCH LIVE: United Launch Alliance scrubbed the launch of an Atlas V 401 on Thursday, Jan. 19 from Space Launch Complex (SLC)-41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The launch was scrubbed because of an aircraft entering the launch complex’s range. Will try again tomorrow, with window opening at 7:42 p.m. Stay tuned to Space Coast Daily for launch coverage.

BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION – United Launch Alliance is set to launch an Atlas V 401 on Thursday, Jan. 19 from Space Launch Complex (SLC)-41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The 40-minute launch window opens at 7:46 p.m. EST.

The Atlas V rocket will carry SBIRS GEO 3, a satellite of the Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) that is a consolidated system for United States infrared space surveillance.

Built by Lockheed Martin, the SBIRS GEO 3 satellite is deployed for the U.S. military to detect missile launches and provide other tactical support.

Mission Description: SBIRS, considered one of the nation’s highest priority space programs, is designed to provide global, persistent, infrared surveillance capabilities to meet 21st century demands in four national security mission areas including: missile warning, missile defense, technical intelligence and battlespace awareness.

Launch Notes: SBIRS GEO Flight 3 will be ULA’s first launch of 2017 and the 69th Atlas V mission overall. This mission marks the 34th Atlas V mission in the 401 configuration; the two previous SBIRS GEO missions also launched on the Atlas V 401 rocket.
