Brevard County Government To Host Black History Month Celebration Feb. 10 In Viera

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – The Brevard County Government will host a community celebration of Black History Month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, at the Government Center, located at 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Building C in Viera
The drop-in event, open to the public, will be held in the Board of County Commissioner’s chambers, first floor of Building C.
Keynote speaker for the event is Dr. Desmond Blackburn, superintendent of Brevard Public Schools.
Activities planned include cultural displays, artwork, literature, musical performances and activities that recognize the significant contributions of African Americans.
There will also be Food Trucks, including Dat-B-Good, Thematics and Dee’s Ribs & Crab Shack, along with desserts by Dana’s Cupcakes.
The national theme for Black History Month 2017 is “The Crisis in Black Education.”
This year’s celebration in Brevard County will be held in commemoration of Walter Butler, a leader and pioneer in the Sharpes Community.
At it’s regular meeting on Feb. 7, the Board of County Commissioners will pay tribute via resolution to Butler’s efforts to improve the quality of life for our residents.
The Black History Month event is hosted by Brevard County Government and the Brevard County Government Cultural Diversity Team.
