Cocoa Chevron Armed Robbery Suspect Sentenced To 20 Years In Prison

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA — Hyman Norrick, 32, one of three suspects in an armed robbery in which the victim fired shots in defense, is now serving a 20-year prison sentence.
Norrick is now in the custody of the Florida Department of Corrections where he will be incarcerated until 2036. Norrick was found guilty after a plea agreement last month.
“Norrick Hyman has been a problem for this community for a very long time,” said Cocoa Police Detective Ben Erskine who investigated the robbery.
“He was certainly a dangerous individual with a history of violent crime. I’m satisfied with the sentence he received.”
His co-defendants are also serving time:
• DeJuan Wright, 25, was found guilty after a no-contest plea last November and was sentenced to 15-months in prison. According to his FDOC file he is scheduled to be released on April 23.
• Janisha Smith, 24, is on felony probation until September, 2020 for her role in the crime.
INCIDENT REPORT:
On January 12, 2016 patrol officers responded to the Chevron at 6 South Cocoa Boulevard for a panic alarm. Further information indicated shots had been fired and a male was wounded.
When officers arrived they located a black male lying in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds and another male later identified as the service station owner/employee holding the male at gunpoint. A silver/gray colored vehicle was also seen fleeing the area at a high rate of speed.
Further investigation revealed the male had entered the store wearing a mask, pointed a gun at the shopkeeper and demanded money. The employee immediately produced his own weapon and shot the suspect several times.
The wounded suspect, who was later identified as Hyman, attempted to flee with help from additional suspects in a silver Camaro. The shopkeeper fired shots at the vehicle as it came toward him in the parking lot and the driver fled the area.
Bulletins were broadcast to area law enforcement and a short time later the vehicle with the suspects still inside was located in Rockledge. The suspects were taken into custody without further incident. Hyman was airlifted to the hospital where he was treated and recovered.
