BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Barnes Boulevard widening project, which began in September 2014, is set to be completed this fall, according to Brevard County officials.

The project’s construction cost is $21.5 million, which was funded through The Viera Company’s contribution of $12.29 million, local option gas tax, impact fees and a Florida Department of Transportation grant.

The improvements include widening Barnes Boulevard’s existing 2 lanes to 4 lanes with center median from the intersection of Fiske Boulevard to just east of the intersection with Murrell Road.

The project length is approximately one mile, and also includes two large retention areas outside of the Barnes Boulevard right of way limits.

Major items of work include clearing and grubbing, earthwork, waterline, sewer line and reuse line relocations, drainage pipe installation, sidewalk and roadway construction.

According to Brevard County officials, the project was needed to improve capacity, address safety and efficiency and to improve drainage and flooding, and mast arm traffic signalization.
