St. Baldricks of Brevard is a part of The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an international volunteer organization that has raised more than $150 million dollars for childhood cancer research just through head-shaving events, like the one held back on March 18.

Here locally in Brevard the organization is headed by Garrett Lamp.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

One of the most popular charity events of the year anywhere is the day people line-up to donate money to have their heads shaved to show their support in eradicating childhood cancer. Lamp is a “Knight” when it comes to his efforts for St. Baldrick’s.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation recognizes individuals who have participated in St. Baldrick events for eight years in a row and Lamp is one of these shaved few.

Not only has Lamp totally disposed of his hair every year for nine years, but as organizer of the Space Coast head-shaving events, he has been instrumental in raising thousands of dollars annually.

Just seven years ago, the first head-shaving event raised $73,000. Last year alone, the more than 400 participating “shavees” brought in $350,000, putting the Brevard function in the St. Baldrick’s top echelon.

“There are 3,000 of these head-shaving events in the world, and we’re Number Nine in terms of total volume,” said Lamp. “It puts us in the same league as big cities like New York, Chicago and Las Vegas.”

The guys will also donate some of the proceeds to the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando. The goal is to raise $2,000 today. For more information, please contact 321-432-2686.

If you can’t make it to Viera to watch these two weekend warriors battle it out, log onto Space Coast Daily TV at 1:25 p.m. and catch all the action.
