BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – This local women’s chorus loves to entertain and produce their own musical events each year for the community and local friends and family.

Platinum Show Chorus is made up of extraordinary women who come together in celebration of a cappella singing, practicing specifically in the art form known as barbershop music.

They are chartered as a chapter of Sweet Adelines International. Founded in 1945 by a small group of women, and originally known as “Sweet Adelines in America,” the organization has grown to a membership of almost 30,000 women in several countries.

A cappella, which means “in chapel style” in Italian, is choral singing performed without instruments. Centuries ago, a cappella was simply religious music composed for use in chapels. There were usually no organs, unlike in large churches, so music was created for voices only.

Barbershop style is vocal harmony, popular during the revival era 1900-1919. This style is close, four-part harmony and ringing chords vocal music.

There are four parts to barbershop harmony. Tenor is the high tone. Lead sings with more volume and authority while carrying the melody. Baritone fills in the missing notes either above or below, while bass fills out the bottom as the foundation of the song.

These tones weave together while sung with accuracy and artistry to generate the signature style which is barbershop music.
