Tragedy befell a south Orlando family Wednesday night when a 2-year-old boy was killed after his 12-year-old sister accidentally ran over him in a neighborhood west of U.S. Highway 441, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

ORLANDO, FLORIDA – Tragedy befell a south Orlando family Wednesday night when a 2-year-old boy was killed after his 12-year-old sister accidentally ran over him in a neighborhood west of U.S. Highway 441, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that while the family was preparing to leave their home, the girl started the vehicle for her parents and the car went into reverse and hit her 2-year-old brother, who was behind the vehicle, according to Florida Highway Patrol PIO Sgt. Kim Montes.

“It’s just awful,” Montes told the Orlando Sentinel. “It was definitely a very chaotic and emotional scene. The family was a wreck, and neighbors rushed over to help.”

The victim was then taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to Sgt. Montes.

FHP investigators are processing the fatal crash scene, and the identity of the family has not been released.
