ORLANDO, FLORIDA (UCF Knights) – For the first time since 2004, UCF claimed a regular season conference championship, by notching a 3-2 victory in a winner-take-all finale against War On I-4 rival South Florida Saturday.
First-year head coach Greg Lovelady guided UCF to the title after the Black and Gold finished last in league standings during the 2016 campaign.
Freshman Joe Sheridan fanned eight Bulls over seven innings of work to move to 10-4 on the campaign. Two shutout innings were delivered by redshirt junior Jason Bahr, who tallied his first save.
A two-run double by freshman Rylan Thomas put the Knights in the lead, 2-1, in the first inning. The eventual game-winning run was driven in by Kam Gellinger, who tallied two base knocks, during the third frame.
The Knights earned the No. 1 seed in The American Championship that starts on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Spectrum Field in Clearwater, Fla., against No. 8 East Carolina.
