Young Golfers Learn About The Game At Eastern Florida State College Fred Gay Golf Academy

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Eastern Florida State College Fred Gay Golf Academy complex is filled with young golfers this week and next learning how to play the game during the 25th annual Eastern Florida State College P.J. Wilson and Henry Scott Youth Golf Camp.
After over two decades of helping young golfers learn and improve their game, the camp continues to grow as 80 young golfers are learning about the sport – everything from what’s a par to how to hold a club while putting and chipping.
“Awesome to see this kind of turnout. The future of the game is in their hands and with a little guidance and motivation, the sky is the limit,” Eastern Florida State College golf coach Jamie Howell said.
Among the people helping run the camp are current members of EFSC’s men’s and women’s golf teams as well as a couple of former pupils who excelled in the camp over the past few years, earned a camp-sponsored scholarship to Eastern Florida State College and are back to help others grow.
“It is awesome — I have never had the opportunity to teach someone the skills that I was taught here,” said Gianna Piscatelli who earned the scholarship last year and will be attending Eastern Florida State College in the fall and playing on the women’s golf team.
“It is really neat to see kids who have never touched a club and I realized that I was in their position once so I am helping them learn the basics and get them started. It has been a great experience.”
The camp will award another scholarship to one of the young golfers during an awards ceremony on June 22, the final day of camp.
The annual golf camp started in 1992 with assistance from Henry Scott and P.J. Wilson, two African American golf professionals in Brevard County. For years it was best known as the Minority Golf Camp because of its efforts to reach out to minorities, but it’s always been open to all young people.
