Cocoa Beach Citizens Circulate Petition To Reverse City Approval of Carnival Rides at Pier

'change their ill-considered decision'

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – A group of concerned citizens have circulated a petition in protest of the City of Cocoa Beach’s decision last month to authorized three carnival-style amusement rides to be added to attractions at the Cocoa Beach Pier.
The petitioned is directed to Mayor Ben Malik and members of the Cocoa Beach Commission, including Ed Martinez, Karalyn Woulas, Skip Williams and Mike Miller. The petition urges the commission to change its decision to allow the rides.
Here’s the text of the petition and proposed amended resolution:
Anyone who lives in or has visited Cocoa Beach, Florida, could not miss its iconic Pier; stretching 800 feet into the Atlantic Ocean and surrounded by pristine white beach where people from all over come to surf, sun, and play in the sand.
Now the City of Cocoa Beach has authorized the addition of three carnival-style amusement rides known as the “Tornado,” “Carousel” and “Drop and Twist,” adjacent to the Pier right up against the beach.
This will result in more congestion and noise that is disruptive to wildlife and local homeowners alike, creating in the view of many a carnival atmosphere that is inconsistent with a beach community that promotes nature’s awesome beauty and serenity.
We therefore petition the Mayor and members of Council of the City of Cocoa Beach to change their ill-considered decision to authorize the addition of carnival rides at the Cocoa Beach Pier, which we have indicated by setting out our names and email addresses below.
We urge Council to reverse this decision for the sake of our beach, our wildlife, ourselves and future generations.
WHEREAS THE CITY OF COCOA BEACH HAS APPROVED AN APPLICATION BY WESTGATE PROPERTIES, THE OWNERS OF THE COCOA BEACH PIER, TO ERECT THREE CARNIVAL TYPE AMUSEMENT RIDES ADJACENT TO THE BEACH KNOWN AS THE “TORNADO”, “CAROUSEL” AND “DROP AND TWIST”;
AND WHEREAS IT IS EXPECTED THAT SUCH RIDES WILL INCREASE CONGESTION, NOISE AND GENERAL DISRUPTION TO THE ENVIRONMENT, INCLUDING TO AREA WILDLIFE AND NEIGHBORS OF THE PIER THAT IS INCONSISTENT WITH THE COCOA BEACH COMMUNITY;
NOW THEREFORE WE, AS SIGNIFIED BELOW, HEREBY PETITION THE CITY OF COCOA BEACH TO RESCIND ITS APPROVAL FOR THESE AMUSEMENT RIDES IN ORDER TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE THE COCOA BEACH WE ENJOY AND LOVE.
