What to avoid on a very hot day

It can be very difficult to keep your cool (figuratively) and not do something stupid during a heat wave. Whenever it’s extremely hot outside and the sun is shining incredibly bright, we are tempted to do the first thing that we think is going to help us stay cool.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – It can be very difficult to keep your cool (figuratively) and not do something stupid during a heat wave. Whenever it’s extremely hot outside and the sun is shining incredibly bright, we are tempted to do the first thing that we think is going to help us stay cool.

However, the first thing is often times not advised. Here is a small guide on how to properly manage days when the heat is borderline unbearable. These tips will help you fight the heat in a proper way which takes into consideration both your immediate wellbeing and the long term one.

Don’t stay in front of an open fridge

This is something that a lot of people do in order to stay cool but it’s actually incredibly counterproductive. Not only will it not cool you the way you want it to, but it will also make the air in your house hotter. How can that be possible, you ask? When you keep the fridge door open, you are inviting the hot air inside. This will make the fridge work a lot harder than usual in order to maintain the low temperature but as a result will overheat in the back. So, while it might seem like a good idea at first, you’re only making things worse for yourself.

Stay away from the dishwasher

While we don’t know of any habits of staying near the dishwasher on heated days to cool off, we do know that people want to wash their dishes. Unfortunately, a full dishwasher cycle will create tremendous amounts of heat. Let it take a break for the day and wash your dishes by hand. It’s not as tragic as it seems. Do yourself a favor by not turning it on while the sun is menacing.

What to do on a very hot day

Create a comfortable and cool environment for yourself by placing a bow of cold water and a fan directed at where you’ll be spending your day. The fan will use the water to spread a cool sensation and refresh the dry air.

Create ventilation with your windows

Make sure to open the windows in multiple rooms as it will create a current between them. This will cool down the house and will prevent it from getting extremely hot.

Think about your pets

This is very important. If you are having a hard time withstanding the heat, think about your poor pets. They are in just as dire of a position as you. Make sure you tend to them and make sure they always have fresh, cold water. Keep them hydrated so their health doesn’t suffer.

Freeze everything

In super hot days, it’s your freezer’s time to shine. Use it for everything and make sure that you always have cold water. Put one or two big bottles of water in the freezer before you head out so you always have cold and refreshing water to drink when at home.

Also put your bed sheets in the freezer for an hour or so. When you take them out they will create a chill and comfortable environment out of your bed, where you can work or relax.
