BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIRDA – Titusville Police reported to a traffic crash near South Park Ave. on Tuesday that seriously injured a 22 year-old Titusville man.
Police say the crash happened around 4 p.m.
According to the report by Titusville Police, a Honda Civic, being driven by Angel Luis Rodriguez, 22, from Titusville, was Northbound on S. Park Ave at Country Club Drive.
A Ford Explorer, being driven by 17-year-old Jason Lee McIlrath JR, 17, from Titusville, turned left onto Country Club Drive from Southbound S. Park Ave, colliding with the Honda Civic.
According to Amy Matthews of the Titusville Police Department, the driver of the Honda Civic, Rodriguez, was not wearing a seatbelt, according to police.
Rodriguez was transported by MedFlight to a trauma center with serious injuries.
The driver of the Ford Explorer was wearing a seatbelt and left uninjured.
The preliminary investigation reveals that the Honda Civic, that Rodriguez was driving, had a modified and custom wooden steering wheel, and that the manufacturer’s airbag had been removed.
Crash investigators believe the combination of no seatbelt and no airbag increased the driver’s injuries.
“This is another example of a crash in which the driver could have walked away with minor injuries if he was just wearing a seatbelt”, said Sergeant Lincoln Strom.
Witnesses to the crash told investigators that the driver of the Honda Civic appeared to be driving at a high-rate of speed.
