BREVARD COOUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – The City of Palm Bay has issued a scam alert regarding automated phone calls soliciting scholarship funds from a phone number that displayed “City of Palm Bay” on the caller ID.
Lisa Morrell, City of Palm Bay Director of Communications and IT, confirmed that the number that was used is an assigned number for Utilities Customer Service.
Morrell said that this is, “a social engineering attack on the public using a credible number assignment to mask a phone number to defraud.”
The City is actively investigating the source of the calls and hopes to correct the situation as quickly as possible. Remember, The City of Palm Bay does not call to solicit anything.
“The City of Palm Bay does not solicit funds,” said City Manager Gregg Lynk.
