BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A 16-year-old Melbourne High School student was found dead after a standoff with police early Thursday morning.
According to the West Melbourne Police Department, the teen, who barricaded himself inside a West Melbourne home in the 5100 block of Martin Lane, was found dead after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The West Melbourne Police Department Strategic Response Team and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded to the incident, which began about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.
According to police, officers were called to the home with information from a woman that her 16-year-old grandson was throwing things inside the house.
When officers entered the home to investigate, police said the 16-year-old boy got a gun from a bedroom and opened fire with a small caliber long gun at the officers, who then retreated.
