DELAND, FLORIDA – The Merritt Island Mustangs girls soccer team claimed the Class 3A State Championship on Friday afternoon after a thrilling game that ended in penalty kicks 3-1 in favor of Merritt Island over Gulf Breeze.

With Friday’s victory, the Mustangs are now back-to-back Class 3A State Champions.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. However, Gulf Breeze didn’t go quietly as the Dolphins battled back and scored an equalizer with 2:15 left to play in regulation.

After a 2-2 tie in regulation and two scoreless overtimes, the 3A State Championship came down to penalty kicks.

Merritt Island Head Coach Scott Carswell helped lead the Mustangs 25-3 overall record in 2018 and staking their claim as one of the best soccer teams ever to come out of the Space Coast.

The 2017 Merritt Island Mustangs were recently named Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame Team of the Year.

The 2018 Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and Sports Awards will be held Friday, May 11 at the Cocoa Beach Country Club.
