Get a Closer Look at Bitcoin at Free Florida Institute of Technology Lecture March 23

Computer science faculty from Florida Institute of Technology will offer the presentation, “Bitcoin and Blockchains: A Closer Look,” at 8 p.m. Friday, March 23.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Computer science faculty from Florida Institute of Technology will offer the presentation, “Bitcoin and Blockchains: A Closer Look,” at 8 p.m. Friday, March 23.

The free, public lecture, part of the Department of Computer Science Public Lecture Series, will explore how the rising importance of digital data and processes in daily life are fueling the reinvention of currency.

Bitcoin is one of the leading digital cryptocurrencies, and it and others reply on blockchains – networks of computers without governmental or centralized authority – to prevent double-spending and preserve anonymity.

The speakers will be:

• Bernard Parenteau, whose main research interests are in cryptocurrencies and blockchains.
• Marius Silaghi, whose main research interests are in cryptography, constraint reasoning, speech recognition, and robotics.

The lecture is from 8-9 p.m. in the auditorium (Room 130) of the Olin Life Sciences Building on the Florida Tech campus in Melbourne.

Following the lecture at approximately 9 p.m., and weather permitting, Florida Tech’s Student Astronomical Society will open the 32-inch Ortega telescope in the nearby Olin Physical Sciences Building for public viewing. Three smaller telescopes will be on hand for use, as well.
