Surveillance video released by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office shows Deputy Scot Peterson outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during the Valentine’s Day massacre that killed 17 people in Parkland, Florida.

The video shows Peterson did not try to confront the gunman and is seen riding out of view on a golf cart.

“It’s a sinking feeling knowing that he went towards the building and ran away from it when he was already there,” Stoneman Douglas sophomore Tanzil Philip told NBC News after watching the footage.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel suspended Peterson last month after viewing the footage. Peterson later tendered his resignation.

President Donald Trump called Peterson’s lack of action “disgusting,” but Peterson’s lawyer said Israel “maligned” the deputy by saying he should have tried to engage the gunman.
