BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Early last week East Precinct Public Service Aide Kayte Herman was in the area of East Crisafulli Road on North Merritt Island when she observed a vehicle partially submerged in the canal along the roadway.

She immediately stopped her vehicle and notified our Communications Center of the incident.

Kayte, who is a non-sworn Public Service Aide observed that two individuals were trapped inside the vehicle so she removed her duty gear and entered the water to assist the vehicle’s occupants.

Once at the vehicle, Kayte discovered a Merritt Island couple in their 80s who required assistance to escape the vehicle.

Kayte first assessed the couple for potential injuries and having found none was able to remove both of the occupants from the vehicle and through the water to the edge of the bank. Once both occupants were secure, she helped them over the embankment with the assistance of a citizen who had also stopped to render aid.

Our Public Service Aides are a vital part of our team, as they handle a number of our calls that are not in progress.

While Kayte currently serves as a Public Service Aide, her goal is to become a Deputy Sheriff for our agency and as you can see she is well on her way.

I am truly proud of Kayte for her actions to save someone in harm’s way and ask that you please join me in thanking her for her fast thinking and actions to help protect our citizens.
