WASHINGTON DC – The White House released images Thursday of Mike Pompeo’s unannounced trip to North Korea during Easter weekend.
The images show the newly confirmed secretary of state shaking hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Pompeo, who was confirmed as secretary of state by the Senate on Thursday, said Kim is “a smart guy who’s doing his homework,” according to a US government official.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders posted the pictures of the two men during their pre-meeting for the possible upcoming summit between President Donald Trump and Kim in late May or early June.
Pompeo’s meeting with Kim would be the first of its kind since secretary of state Madeleine Albright met with Kim Jong Un’s father, Kim Jong Il in 2000.
