Florida School Shooting: System failure Blamed
Sad moments like the killing of 17 innocent people including students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida leave a deep scar in all of us. The pain of such a tragedy affects more than just the victims and their families, it devastates whole communities. It questions the ability of the American people to protect their kids at school.
In trying to find closure through finding out what actually happened there is bound to be human error evident. To err is human but to forgive is divine goes that old saying but when so many lives have been lost and so much hurt caused heads must usually roll and indeed they have.
Failing to Act in the Face of Danger
The most public face of the disgrace that the Florida shooting is turning out to be is the school’s resource deputy, Scot Peterson. There is video footage that shows the armed law enforcement officer staying outside while the shootings were taking place. The officer has since retired from the Broward County Sheriff’s department and now has guards on his private residence. Peterson has been labeled a coward by Trump but his failing is just the tip of the iceberg.
It turns out that the police including the FBI had received tips about the potential threat that Nikolas Cruz posed. This information was confirmed in a statement by FBI Director Christopher Wray. The intelligence that was provided by Nikolas’ neighbor who was concerned over the number of guns and knives the teenager had.
