OBITUARY: Thomas H. Stoy Passes Away Peacefully April 18 in Melbourne at 88 Years Old

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Thomas H. Stoy passed away peacefully at the age of 88, on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, in Melbourne, FL, with his son, Jeffrey Stoy by his side. Mr. Stoy was born on December 3, 1929, in Uniontown, PA.
Tom is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Jo Stoy, and his two sons Thomas H. Stoy, Jr. and Jeffrey A. Stoy. He had one brother Charles B. Stoy, Jr. He is survived by two daughters-in-law, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Stoy married Betty Jo, on April 23, 1955, in Washington, DC. They met while both were assigned to the Filing Unit in the Records and Communication Division at the FBI headquarters.
Mr. Stoy served in the U.S. Army to support the war in Korea. He was a dental assistant and with this medical knowledge, he was credited with saving the life of a fellow soldier during a live grenade training accident.
At the age of 21, he applied to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His first assignment was in Washington, DC. He continued to take classes at Strayer College to complete his degree in accounting.
Upon completing his degree, he was accepted into the FBI’s Special Agent training at Quantico Marine Corps Base, VA. His first field assignment as an agent was in Atlanta, GA. Three years later he was assigned to Miami, FL where he specialized in solving a variety of white-collar crimes.
Mr. Stoy was promoted to Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility in Washington DC, where he retired after 28 years of service. He was a member of the Masonic Order for over 63 years and a member of Suntree United Methodist Church.
Upon retirement, Tom and Betty moved to Melbourne, FL where they enjoyed traveling throughout the US, Europe, Asia, the Far East and Africa. As an avid reader, he was a long time member of the community book club. Mr. Stoy will be deeply missed by family, friends, neighbors and all who knew him.
