SPACE COAST DAILY TV HEALTH WATCH: Dr. Brian Dowdell talks with Space Coast Daily’s Gina Liberto about SOAR’S comprehensive, individualized treatment for auto crash patients.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A car crash happens in seconds and affects a lifetime. Pain from an auto accident rarely fades away without intervention. According to a study in “Arthritis Care and Research,” accident victims are more likely to develop chronic pain that can make life miserable for years.

To alleviate pain and minimize damage, prompt treatment is required after an auto accident. Chiropractors had long been the go-to professionals for treatment of injuries resulting from auto accidents, but the arsenal of therapy modalities at their disposal can be limited.

While orthopedic specialists typically can offer more treatment options, many have been nevertheless hesitant to treat injuries from auto accidents.

“Physicians in the past have been resistant to working with auto accident victims because it often entailed court appearances,” said Dr. Brian Dowdell, founder of the Central Florida practice known as SOAR, which stands for Spine, Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. SOAR’s offices are located in Melbourne, Rockledge and Orlando.

While some medical doctors may not treat car crash patients, SOAR, on the other hand, offers comprehensive help for these types of injuries.

From its inception in 2003, SOAR has focused on a multi-disciplinary approach to helping individuals with orthopedic and neuromuscular issues through the application of advanced minimally invasive interventional paint therapy, physical therapy, medication optimization and diagnostic and laboratory testing. Its on-site surgical center is equipped with the most advanced technology in the nation.

Timely Ideal Treatment

Dr. Dowdell started treating individuals involved in auto accidents a few years ago as part of his practice’s philosophy of providing a one-stop shop for patients with any orthopedic issues, regardless of how these injuries occurred.

Car crashes are often associated with spinal injuries, which Dowdell and his SOAR team address on an individual basis to optimize care, from conservative therapy to more aggressive treatment.
“Patients are triaged on their first visit so we can determine what will work best in their situation,” said Dr. Dowdell.

After a complete history, detailed physical examination and the appropriate diagnostic studies, the patient is given a timely ideal treatment for the sustained injuries to better achieve rapid recovery. SOAR doctors partner with other medical specialties and attorneys to ensure the patient receives the comprehensive type of medical attention, as well as any legal services that are necessary.

In addition to auto injuries and workers’ compensation, Dr. Dowdell specializes in interventional pain management techniques that include implantable devices, kyphoplasty, percutaneous discectomy, radiofrequency ablation and percutaneous cortisone injections.

Highly Trained, Experienced

A graduate of the University of Buffalo, Dr. Dowdell finished his internship in internal medicine at that institution and his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation and pain management at Stanford University.

In addition to his medical studies, he completed a master’s thesis in cancer research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He served as an assistant clinical professor at Stanford University Medical Center, where he published research and lectured nationally.

In private practice since 1998, Dr. Dowdell is a past president of the Brevard County Medical Society and served as a delegate for the Florida Medical Association. SOAR’s reputation for excellent and effective treatment is due to the experience of the medical team Dr. Dowdell has assembled.

Physical therapy is considered an integral part of Dr. Dowdell’s multi-faceted practice. The physical therapy department helps patients improve their flexibility, strength, functional mobility and ability to accomplish tasks of everyday living. Each patient receives a custom plan of care, delivered at the clinic by experienced therapists and accompanied by a home exercise program.

In-house diagnostics include EMG/NCV, or electromyography and nerve conduction testing, high complexity lab, x-ray, bone densitometry, discography and prescription monitoring.

Stem Cell Therapy

Among the “stars” in the SOAR treatment firmament is stem cell therapy, the efficacy of which Dr. Dowdell has witnessed first-hand since SOAR has offered this promising treatment modality for several years.

“The outcomes have been phenomenal,” said Dr. Dowdell.

Stem cell therapy utilizes the body’s own supercells, harvested from the patient’s own bone marrow through a painless procedure and combined with amniotic cells for a potent pain treating “cocktail” that is injected into the injured area.

Stem cells have the unique ability to produce both copies of themselves and other more specialized cell types every time they divide. They work fast and they work well.

“The combination creates accelerated healing of tissue,” said Dr. Dowdell. “It’s like PRP(plasma-rich platelet therapy) on steroids. We have not had to repeat procedures since we started with this protocol.”

Stem cell therapy is minimally invasive with no downtime. The results can seem miraculous.

“It is appropriate for so many pain issues,” said Dr. Dowdell.

SOAR is a Prospira PainCare Center of Excellence; Prospira is the nation’s leading provider of minimally invasive pain management treatments.

SOAR is not just about the latest technology and treatments. It is also about caring and compassion. From the time a patient first enters the office to the time he or she completes treatment, patients are treated with respect and made to feel at ease.
