BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA — Dussich Dance Studio, located at 125 Imperial Street in Merritt Island, is celebrating a major milestone as the family-owned and -operated dance school is marking its 60th anniversary.

Most are less than 50 years old, probably making Dussich the longest-running dance studio in the county and possibly one of the longest running of its kind in the state.

“We’re proud to have been a part of the Brevard community for 60 years and to have brought the joy of dance to so many county residents’ lives,” said Creative Director Liz Bevilacqua.

“We encourage people who are familiar with our studio, as well as those who have not yet participated in our classes, to celebrate along with us at our upcoming shows. It will be a thrilling two days of performances as current and former students take the stage to share their talents.”

The Dussich Dance Studio Staff is celebrating a major milestone as the family-owned and -operated dance school is marking its 60th anniversary.

There will be excitement in the air June 9 and 10 when the studio presents three shows to celebrate the anniversary:

• The 60th Diamond Anniversary Recital will be held Saturday, June 9 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
• The 60th Reunion/Special Alumni Show will be held Sunday, June 10 at 4 p.m.

All shows will be performed at Merritt Island High School, located at 100 E. Mustang Way. Tickets range from $10-$15 and can be purchased at the studio or at the door.

The recital will feature ballet, jazz, tap, acro, lyrical and contemporary routines performed by the studio’s classes, its competition team and its resident dance company, Imperial Dance Corps.

The alumni show will feature routines performed throughout the studio’s history and dances performed by families that have had more than one generation attend Dussich.

The studio has also invited former students who have worked as professional dancers to participate in or watch the alumni show.

Former Dussich student Patrick VanBuren, whose recent positions include principal dancer and artistic director of Montgomery Ballet, will be teaching a ballet intensive from June 18-22.

As an homage to the studio’s history, the senior members of Imperial Dance Corps – Dussich Dance Studio’s resident dance company – performed “Maniac” this year as one of the company’s many routines. The number is based on the movie “Flashdance” and was choreographed by instructor Emily Luedtke to fit with IDC director Kristy Hefner’s vision for the theme “decades.” “Flashdance” came out in theatres in 1983, the same year the studio celebrated its 25th anniversary. The company will perform “Maniac” at the studio’s recital Saturday, June 9 at 1 and 7 p.m. at Merritt Island High School.
