Michel, Savic, Galvan, Azucey advance to next round

PLANO, TEXAS (Eastern Florida State) – The Eastern Florida State College men’s tennis team opened the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament with a couple of wins in Plano, Texas.

Nils Michel got the first win for the Titans, beating Pima’s Tomothy Ou 6-2, 6-4 in No. 1 singles to advance to the second round at Collin College.

Milan Savic also picked up a win in the first round, defeating Copiah-Lincoln CC’s Tripp Wyatt 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 singles. He will face New Mexico Military Institute’s Ned Merrion who also won in straight sets on Monday.

No. 2 singles player Adriel Azucey is the No. 3 seed and had a bye in the first round as did Andreas Wejs at No. 3 singles. Alwyn Mushonga begins the tournament Tuesday after the No. 6 seed at No. 4 singles had a bye and will play Iowa Central’s Antony Lekoko Tuesday. Teammate Fabricio Galvan is also a No. 6 seed at No. 6 singles and will play Marion’s Vance Llewellyn who won in straight sets.

In doubles, the duo of Savic and Galvan defeated Wallace State’s Andrew Bizillia and Check Freeman 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles to advance to the second round. They will face No. 5 seed Andrew Parker and Aleksandr Pokusaev of Seminole State in the second round.

The No. 1 doubles team of Mushonga and Wejs fell in the first round 7-5, 6-2 and will compete in the consolation bracket.

The No. 2 doubles team of Azucey and Michel are the No. 3 seed and had a bye in the first round.

The second round will be Tuesday with the quarterfinals scheduled for Wednesday at the Collin County Tennis Facility in Plano, Texas.
