Man Dies After ‘Physical Altercation’ In West Melbourne, Two Officers Placed On Administrative Leave

BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Department of Law Enforcement are conducting a death investigation on Monday after a man died during a “physical altercation” with West Melbourne Police.
Police responded to Publix at 2261 West New Haven Ave on Monday morning at around 10:40 am after a person was acting “erratically,” according to police.
According to a news release by police, when officers arrived on scene and located the 46-year-old man, police asked him to leave. Police say the man initially complied. However, management called the police, shortly after, for assistance again.
When officers arrived a second time, police say the man was not cooperating with authorities and a physical altercation ensued.
During the altercation, the man became unresponsive, according to police.
Officers immediately began administering CPR, until Brevard County Fire Rescue arrived.
The man was transported to a local hospital where he later died.
In accordance with department policy, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will assume this death investigation.
“Two West Melbourne Police Officers are being placed on administrative leave, which is also in accordance with department policy,” said a spokesperson with the West Melbourne Police Department.
The deceased man’s identity has not been released at this time.
The identities of the two officers placed on administrative leave have also not been identified, at this time.
