BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA (Florida Tech) – The NCAA held it’s 2018 DII Rowing Selection Show Monday evening, where No. 2 Florida Tech was granted a team bid into this year’s Championships that will be held at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
The last time the Panthers earned a team bid was back in 2010 in Adam Thorstad’s fourth year as head coach, where the Panthers finished fourth with six points behind Philadelphia, Seattle Pacific, and Western Washington on the Gold River at the Sacramento Aquatic Center
During the 2017 season, Florida Tech entered the Championships with an at-large bid and fielded a V8 shell that took third in the Grand Final. However, the Panthers will look to take home the program’s first-ever NCAA DII Women’s Rowing title this year, as they have shown major improvements over the duration of the 2018 campaign in both the V8 and V4 events.
This year, in addition to the University of Central Oklahoma, Mercyhurst, and Western Washington, the Panthers will race both their varsity eight and four shells. The champion will be determined based upon the total amount of points accumulated by the crews.
On Friday, FIT will race its eight in Heat A in Lane 2 against national runner-up Central Oklahoma and Mercyhurst, while the four will take on Central Oklahoma in Heat B in Lane 4.
The winners of each heat will advance to the Grand Finals on Sunday, leaving the remaining crews to race in Repechage on Saturday morning at 11:24 a.m. The winners of the Repechage will advance to the Grand Finals and the remaining crews will race in the Petite Finals on Sunday, May 27 at 9:36 a.m.
