BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA– Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces.

The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.

By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.

Sheriff Ivey would like us to keep in mind that while Memorial Day was created to honor the men and women of the armed services who sacrificed their lives for the protection of our great nation, the message is often lost that Memorial Day is just another holiday, another long weekend or the start of summer.

“As parents we routinely talk with our children about the importance of making good choices in life and without question Memorial Day is another great chance to teach our future leaders and parents about the importance of the day and those that gave so much so that we can enjoy the freedoms of today,” Ivey says in his message.

We must always impress our children to honor those that protected and protect us from tyranny and terrorism, fighting for those who can’t protect themselves, protecting us from harm, hatred and evil

The Sheriff encourages everyone to please honor the fallen by attending one of the many Memorial Day celebrations throughout the county.
