Titusville Terriers Head Coach Wayne Lawrence Steps Away From Coaching

BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – Titusville Terriers Head Coach Wayne Lawrence has decided to step away from coaching football for this upcoming season after wanting to spend more time with his family.

Lawrence will still teach at the school for the upcoming school year.

Lawrence’s decision to step away makes it the eighth prep football coach since December that will be replaced by a local Brevard County School.

Lawrence led Titusville to the regional playoffs in 2014. The playoff berth was Titusville’s first appearance in 19 years.

Cocoa, Merritt Island, Eau Gallie, Viera, Bayside, Space Coast and Merritt Island Christian have all had coaching changes since November.

Cocoa – Cocoa head coach John Wilkinson announced after 13 seasons with Tigers that he will be coaching at New Smyrna Beach High School next season. Cocoa High School named former UCF Knight quarterback Ryan Schneider their new head football coach.

Merritt Island – Merritt Island Mustangs head coach Jeff Mclean decided to step away from his head coaching duties after last season. The move by Mclean led to Hurlie Brown being hired as Merritt Island’s head coach. Brown, a 1987 graduate of Merritt Island and former University of Miami player, coached defensive backs and special teams for the last two seasons. Mclean still remains at Merritt Island High School as the Athletic Director.

Eau Gallie – Christopher Sands was hired by Eau Gallie High School to fill the coaching vacancy left when Tim Powers resigned in November.

Viera – Viera High School Athletic Director Chris Gallagher announced on November 30 that Hawks head football coach Kevin Mays stepped down as head coach to accept a position with Osceola County Public Schools as athletic director of the new Tohopokeliga High School, which is set to open in August. Viera hired Derek Smith as their next head coach, who was the defensive coordinator for the Hawks under Kevin Mays.

Bayside – hired Cory Broomfield as their next head football coach after Mike Nahl’s resignation.

Space Coast – hired Matt Diesel to be their next head football coach. Diesel takes over for Jake Owens, who resigned in December after spending six seasons with the Vipers.

Merritt Island Christian – AD Greg Gage will be the head coach for the Cougars this season. Gage takes over Jamie Bopp, who took a job in Savannah, Georgia. Bopp spent 14 years at Merritt Island Christian and was the schools principal and head football coach last season.
